UAE Press: Dubai has set stage for exceptional Expo

ABU DHABI, A UAE newspaper has said that with less than 700 days to go until Expo 2020’s opening ceremony, a total of 190 countries have confirmed their participation. The stupendous milestone means that Expo has already surpassed the 180-nation commitment set out in the successful 2013 bid to host a World Expo for the first time in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia region.

“That’s great news for the nation and its people,” said The Gulf Today in an editorial on Tuesday.

Reem Al Hashemy, Minister of State for International Cooperation and Director-General of Dubai Expo 2020 Bureau, is right in stating that the confirmation by 190 international participants is further testament to the UAE’s stature on the international stage and demonstrates the world’s confidence in the UAE’s ability to bring the world together.

Dubai is a city of superlatives and its fondness for the Number 1 slot is well known. For the first time in the 167-year history of World Expos, each participating country will have its own pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, giving all nations the opportunity to showcase their achievements, innovations, cultures and long-term visions to the world.

That’s not all. Country pavilions will also be organised according to Expo 2020’s key subthemes of Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability, rather than geographically, and that’s another World Expo first.

Expo 2020 Dubai became the first World Expo and the second ever “mega-event” to secure a Procurement Excellence award from the highly-respected Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS) organisation, a major vote of confidence for the World Expo’s procurement practices.

The event will attract as many as 25 million visits, with 70 percent of visitors projected to come from outside the UAE. That’s likely to be the largest proportion of international visitors in the 167-year history of World Expos.

“There are 200 nationalities living in perfect harmony and the UAE has thus set a splendid example on unity in diversity,” added the editorial comment.

In recent years, participants in World Expos, including governments, international organisations and companies, have gathered to find solutions to universal challenges and to promote their achievements, products, ideas, innovations, national brand as destinations for tourism, trade and investment.

Every participating nation will play an important role in the delivery of an outstanding World Expo.

The Sharjah-based daily concluded by saying, “There is no doubt that the Dubai experience will energetically bring to life the Expo 2020 theme of ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’.”
