Sharjah Ruler visits 8th Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial

SHARJAH, H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, visited on Sunday the 8th edition of Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial, SCB, organised by Sharjah Department of Culture, SDC, from April 2nd until June 2nd with the theme “Jawhar”.

He toured the Biennial’s various pavilions, which attract several renowned calligraphers and practitioners from across the world to showcase their artworks and projects.

He also visited Dar Al Nadwa where he exchanged talks with the distinguished guests participating in the show, discussed with them the future of Arabic calligraphy and reviewing their experiences and productions.

The participants praised Sheikh Sultan’s unrelenting support for the art of calligraphy.

At the Emirates Society for Arabic Calligraphy and Islamic Ornamentation, Sheikh Sultan was briefed on the artworks on display and their contents.

Ruler of Sharjah highlighted the need to encourage the young Emirati people to study the art of Arabic calligraphy.

He concluded his visit by touring the Sharjah Centre for the Art of Arabic Calligraphy and Ornamentation that hosts an exhibition featuring a number of creative artworks representing different trends of art produced by a number of prominent artists.

During the tour, a number of gifts were presented to the Ruler that included calligraphy works and some scientific books and academic studies on the art of calligraphy.

The event witnessed the participation of 227 artists and calligraphers displaying 500 artworks.

Sheikh Sultan was accompanied by Sheikh Salem bin Abdul Rahman Al Qasimi, Head of the Ruler’s Court; Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Owais, Chairman of Sharjah Department of Culture, Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Musallam, Chairman of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage, SIH, Mohammed Obaid Al Zaabi, Head of Protocol and Hospitality Department, a number of guests, artists, officials and dignitaries.
