RAB claims to arrest chief coordinator of new militant outfit ‘al-Ansar (HuJi)’

The elite police unit said on Wednesday they have arrested five activists of al-Ansar (HuJI), including its chief coordinator Md Rashidul Alam.

The arrests were made during an overnight raid at Dhaka’s Hazaribagh.

In another related development, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police said on Wednesday morning that they had arrested 14 activists of the Jamaat-e-Islami’s student wing from a ground-floor apartment in the same area.

Police have been conducting search operations at different parts of the capital almost every night following the Gulshan and Sholakia terror attacks last month.

During one of these routine searches, a gunfight erupted early on Jul 26 between police and suspected militants holed up in an apartment at Kalyanpur.

The SWAT team stormed the apartment later and nine suspected militants were gunned down, said police.
