Players with special needs to participate in Ramadan Women’s Sports Tournament

SHARJAH — The ninth edition of the Ramadan Women’s Sports Tournament will continue on Tuesday, after three basketball matches received great support from enthusiastic audience on the second day.

A friendly basketball match is scheduled for Monday between a team comprising players with special needs and their able-bodied counterparts to highlight the skills of the former.

“The Ramadan Women’s Sports Gathering is characterised by its excellent organisation and enthusiasm demonstrated by both the competitors and the audience. The contest is being held under the supervision of an elite group of women’s referee committees led by sportswomen from Emirati sports unions and federations, ensuring that all the athletes compete in fair conditions,” said Nada Al Naqbi, Director General of the Sharjah Women’s Sports Foundation, SWSF.

“The tournament aims to give women a space to continue physical activity during Ramadan and to help them maintain their exercise routine during the holy month. The first day of the volleyball competition revealed outstanding skills and high performance, with the public turnout reflecting positively on the performance of all the teams,” Al Naqbi added.

She noted that this year’s edition featured three sporting disciplines: volleyball, basketball and shooting. About 350 female athletes from 20 sports clubs will participate in various rounds of the three competitions.

Held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of H.H. the Ruler of Sharjah, Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs and Chairperson of the SWSF, the week-long tournament is aimed at honing the skills of the participating sportswomen, ensuring their physical fitness, and giving them the opportunity to enjoy the spiritual ambience of Ramadan.
