Our goal is to empower people with disabilities, says Sheikha Jameela

SHARJAH — Sheikha Jameela bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Vice Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs and Director-General of the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services, SCHS, has said that the first sustainability report of the city of Sharjah for the year 2016 based on the theme “Towards a Sustainable Vision to Empower People with Disabilities,” reflects the essence of the city.

She said that the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services has always sought to guarantee its sustainability. It aims to empower people with disabilities to get an education and manage their lives independently. This is in line with the city’s vision of being the leading association in the UAE and the Arab region to support, embrace and empower people with disabilities.

“We have had a successful journey, since our establishment in 1979, in enabling people with disabilities and starting projects that support their case on the local, regional and international levels. The aim is to achieve sustainability, and we realise that success requires hard work and determination,” she added.

She expressed her happiness on the publishing of the city’s first report on the Global Reporting Initiative, GRI, website. It is based on transparency in reporting, according to the guidelines of sustainability reports. The report is considered as a comprehensive document highlighting the direct link between sustainability practices and the success of its activities.

This is based on the right balance between goals in various educational, social, environmental, legal, cultural, economical and rehabilitation fields. It is made possible by highlighting the achievements on the level of beneficiaries, the community, and the relations with strategic partners.

Khadija Bamakhrama, Planning and Follow-up Officer, expressed the pride of Sharjah city in its humanitarian services. This includes works such as issuing of the first sustainability report and committing to sustainability standards complying with the GRI guidelines.

She stressed that the city’s sustainability report is subject to the monitoring of an authority working under the umbrella of the supreme administration of the organisation. It ratified the report and guaranteed to reveal all the efforts of the city in the area of sustainability in an accurate and efficient way. The city reports are being circulated to partners and stakeholders annually, she informed.
