OIC calls for intensifying efforts to contain cholera epidemic in Yemen

JEDDAH — The General Secretariat of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, OIC, has called upon the international community, the international organisations and the civil society organisations, to intensify their efforts in supporting the Republic of Yemen to contain the cholera epidemic, stop its spread and address the humanitarian and health situation, which has significantly deteriorated.

The OIC has welcomed the announcement of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman Bin Abdul Aziz of instructing the King Salman Centre for Relief and Humanitarian Work to take the necessary steps to combat cholera epidemic and contain it in Yemen.

In a statement, the General Secretariat pointed out that Yemen is witnessing a significant increase in cholera cases, where the number of infections exceeded 23,000, while the number of deaths reached 242 in 18 governorates over the past few weeks. “The cases may reach 200,000 over the next six months, which warns of a rapid outbreak of the epidemic,” it has warned.
