Ministry of Culture celebrates International Workers Day

ABU DHABI, — Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development, stressed that the world is now witnessing the progress achieved by the wise leadership of the UAE in labour rights.

The progress in labour rights, witnessed both at the regional and international levels, is a result of the efforts made to create an atmosphere of familiarity, understanding, peace, prosperity and happiness by the UAE for all its citizens and residents, which has led to economic growth and renaissance, accompanied by social and political stability, as well as increased opportunities.

Sheikh Nahyan thanked President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai; His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and Supreme Council Members; and Their Highnesses Rulers of the Emirates for their continuous efforts to protect the workers’ rights and provide them with the right work environment, thus promoting cultural values, knowledge, co-existence and tolerance.

This came during a ceremony organised by the Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development on Friday 28th April in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, as part of the ministry’s events for the Year of Giving under the slogan “Zayed’s UAE brings us together” to celebrate the International Labour Day.

The ceremony was also attended by Afra Al Sabri, Assistant Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, and several ambassadors to the UAE, diplomats, businessmen, heads of federal and local bodies and more than 8,000 workers from various nationalities.

He noted that the Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development was keen to celebrate International Labour Day to reflect the importance of the role played by labourers and their huge impact on the cultural, knowledge, economic and social development journey. The ministry also aims to support labourers and workers through communication and co-operation with the private and public sectors in the country.

This is an opportunity to express a firm belief in the values of work as the basis for achieving comprehensive development and progress of the country among the cultural diversity with the existence of more than 200 nationalities in UAE. The labour rights are natural rights implemented by the Emirati law and called for by all religions, especially Islam, he added.

He thanked and congratulated all labourers across the country and appreciated their efforts in performing their duties, being part of the country’s renaissance, and serving the journey of cultural, economic and social development.
