HM King directs efficient implementation of alternative sentencing

Manama, His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa directed the Government to reinforce its capabilities, for the effective application of the provisions of the penal code on alternative sentencing, and the provision of rehabilitation measures and programmes commensurate with the personal circumstances of those sentenced, to be reintegrated into society, so as to achieve public interest, the desired goals of punishment, and deter any future criminal repeat offences.

The royal directive affirmed that the Kingdom of Bahrain has adopted in its legislation all that achieves security for all citizens and bolsters the pillars of development and stability, based on justice, which takes into account mainly the principles of harmonization, relevance and proportionality.

This law is an important qualitative step forward that includes a system which allows for a variety of punishments, and provides space for criminal penalties commensurate with the age, health, sex and personal circumstances of the sentenced. The law which is also commensurate with the nature of the crime, strengthens ways of combating criminal offences and deters its perpetrators without prejudicing the rights of the victims.
