ADM destroys two tonnes of expired consumer goods

ABU DHABI, The Abu Dhabi City Municipality, ADM, in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Waste Management Centre, Tadweer, has destroyed two tonnes of foodstuff found expired or falling short of the health standards enforced in the UAE.

The Public Health Division of the ADM has launched a campaign aimed at boosting public health and protecting community members against the hazards of consumer goods that are expired or incompatible with the health standards that guarantee the safety of individuals and community members.

Through the campaign, the municipality has seized and destroyed items, including cosmetics and personal care products, which were expired, of an unknown origin, or in breach of the product labelling conditions. It has also confiscated prohibited items being sold at markets and beauty salons, which were illegal and unlicensed. The inspectors of the Public Health Division of the ADM have reported such items.

The total number of confiscated and destroyed items during the campaign amounted to 7,681 products that were expired or in violation of health and labelling regulations.

Tadweer has provided much logistical support and destroyed all seized items. The efforts of all organisations contribute to the secured health and safety of community members against outlawed practices relating to the trading in unlicensed consumer products.

The Public Health Division of ADM is carrying out year-round inspection campaigns targeting men’s salons and ladies’ beauty parlours, as well as cosmetics outlets, out of its goal to maintain the safety and health of community members. The campaigns will continue in markets and retail outlets to eradicate this phenomenon, which negatively impacts the economy and results in negative health impacts as a result of using outlawed products falling short of the required health and consumer standards.

The municipality seeks to intensify these campaigns to cover the entire geographical span of Abu Dhabi and suburban areas. The continuous campaigns undertaken by the municipality targeting trading outlets and markets in Abu Dhabi have resulted in seizing hundreds of expired consumer goods found unfit for human use. Some of these products made their way to the market for selling under the counter, which poses serious risks to the health and safety of consumers.
