ADU allocates AED11.5 million for scholarship, financial aid for 2018

ABU DHABI, Abu Dhabi University, ADU, has allocated AED11.5 million to scholarships and financial aid for the first semester of the upcoming academic year 2018-2019, which will begin on 2nd September. The scholarship amount is expected to benefit around 1,689 outstanding and financially challenged students.

With this allocation, ADU’s Scholarships and Financial Aid Fund has succeeded in easing financial burdens of more than 8,643 students through contributing over AED151,000,000 since its inception in 2003.

Abu Dhabi University’s scholarships provide meritorious students in need with financial aid that ranges from a 10 percent to 40 percent discount on the university’s study fees. Interested students can apply to the university’s scholarship office that will evaluate applications on a case by case basis to confirm eligibility for the scholarship.

Ali Saeed bin Harmal Al Dhaheri, Chairman of Abu Dhabi University’s Board of Directors, said, “A higher education institution’s primary role is not limited to merely providing education.

It extends to finding flexible and innovative ways to help pay for that education. We provide not only educational and support services for students, but also facilitate the funding and assistance to acquire the education that will later help qualify them for fields that are both innovative and creative.”

Dubai Municipality initiative reduces construction cost in Dubai by 12%

DUBAI, Dubai Municipality’s new initiative that allows contractors to design and supervise metal structures for industrial projects without appointing consultancy offices has reduced the construction costs by 12 percent and the project licensing period by 33%.

Dawood Al Hajiri, Director General of Dubai Municipality, has honored the companies involved in the design and implementation of the metal structures in the Emirate of Dubai. During the ceremony, one of the companies that obtained the first such building permits presented its experience.

Al Hajiri said that it is one of the many initiatives that will be launched by the Municipality in a bid to simplify the procedures and reduce the cost of building and encourage investment by creating a stimulating environment with easy and fast procedures.

He pointed out that this initiative aims at reducing the steps of the new building permit procedures, which the Dubai Emirate’s Building Permits Procedure Development Committee has already launched in order to enhance international competitiveness in the ease of issuing building permits as per the World Bank guidelines to make Dubai a source of global best practices.

Al Hajiri said the move is in line with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to enhance investment, reduce costs, strengthen the economic competitiveness of Dubai as well as the continuous government support for the investment environment in the emirate, which will have positive effects on all segments of the society, directly and indirectly.

He added that this initiative is only the first step within the Municipality’s road map to support investors and reduce the cost of construction.

Al Hajiri stressed that the stimulating investment environment brought by this initiative will save financial cost and enhance speed of completion of construction projects with steel and industrial buildings in particular to meet and keep up with the pace of development in the field of construction.

He added that the Municipality has devoted its efforts to the success of this initiative and study its results on the local market, in terms of activating the design and implementation activity of the construction companies of metal structures.

According to this initiative, the contractors were allowed to submit directly through the electronic program for building licenses to obtain a building permit for industrial buildings, which does not exceed the height of ground and first floors, to design and implement the project without the presence of a consultant so that the company takes up the job of the consultant of obtaining building permits from the Dubai Municipality and oversee the progress of work in the project.

DAFZA reduces free zone business set up fees by up to 65%

DUBAI, Dubai Airport Freezone Authority, DAFZA, has reduced business setup cost by up to 65 percent, as part of its aim to increase its regional competitiveness and activate a number of key sectors by attracting Foreign Direct Investment, FDI. Supporting Dubai’s efforts to become an ideal destination for investment and prosperity, the decision will help achieve further stability for the operational processes of free zone companies and consequently sustain and drive investment growth.

Dr. Mohammed Al Zarooni, Director-General, DAFZA, said, “These incentives were agreed upon following comprehensive studies and polls evaluating the free zone’s initiatives, services, and business environment. This has allowed us to ensure flexibility at DAFZA in meeting the requirements of new foreign investors and current customers.

“We are offering unique services that take into account the global economic climate and allow customers to increase earnings and operating profits as well as achieve business growth and prosperity. The ultimate goal is to drive local economic development and support the sustainability of direct FDI, accelerating and increasing its contribution to Dubai’s GDP.”

DAFZA has revisited and reduced registration, license, and staff visa fees for new investors by 65 percent, 33 percent, and 20 percent, respectively. Establishment card issuance fees have been cut by 17 percent, while fees for Board Resolution and MOA issuance have been waived.

The new incentives include facilitating the process of obtaining general trading licenses for new investors by having the capital requirement from AED1 million to AED500,000. It has also allowed its member companies to be structured as a Limited Liability Free Zone Company, in a bid to provide more flexibility in business setup, licensing and operation.

DAFZA has waived license expiry fines in an effort to relax the terms of license renewal. Allowing the restoration of legal records and licenses, the decision will help investors renew their expired license without paying any late renewal fines. This reflects the authority’s constant support for the growth of business sectors and its commitment to remove all the obstacles faced by them in order to develop the economy and create a competitive, investment-friendly business environment.

It has also launched a restructuring process of free zone licenses and related fees. This will enhance the setup and operation experience for investors who wish to set up in the free zone by offering them greater flexibility in choosing the business and service activities that best correspond to the nature of their work.

Seeing the number of economic activities which are over 2,000 across 18 major sectors, the new license structure will be in line with ISIC Rev 4, the UN benchmark for classification of economic activities. The new license structure will be introduced to new investors and current customers at the end of Q3 2018.

DAFZA declared that more initiatives and incentives are in the pipeline.
