Yemeni government is working to establish peace: Minister

GENEVA, — The Yemeni government is working to establish peace, but the desired peace is difficult to achieve because the rebel militias have not yet surrendered arms, Minister of Human Rights Dr. Mohammed Askar told reporters today He was speaking in a press conference held at the Swiss Press Club following his meeting with United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein on the sidelines of the 34th session of the UN Human Rights Council.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has agreed to help the Yemeni Ministry of Human Rights to build shelters for former child soldiers, who were recruited by the rebel Houthi group, he said.

The OHCHR will also support the ministry’s capacity-building efforts, based on institutional standards, to enable it to help Yemeni civil society organisations in the future, Askar added.
