UAE participates in Social Committee of Economic and Social Council meetings at Arab League

CAIRO — The UAE participated in the meetings of the Social Committee of the Economic and Social Council at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Arab league, to prepare a regional social report that will be presented at the Council’s ministerial session on Thursday.

The UAE delegation was headed by Mohammed Saleh Shelwah, Advisor to the Minister of Economy.

Hussain bin Shuwaish Al Shuwaish, Director-General of the Arab and Islamic Economic Relations Department at the Saudi Ministry of Finance, highlighted the importance of Arab social work as one of the two pillars, along with the economic aspect, of joint Arab work in the Economic and Social Council.

While heading the meeting, Al Shuwaish said that Arab countries rely on the social sector to improve the joint Arab working system, while stressing the importance of preparing their social report for the 29th Arab Summit, which will be held in Riyadh in March of next year.

Bader Al Deen Al Alali, Assistant Secretary-General for Social Affairs at the Arab League, stressed the importance of the Social Committee’s discussions, which will review the Secretary-General’s report on social sector activities between its previous session and the current 100th session, as well as how to implement the decisions from the Council’s previous session.

In a press statement on the sidelines of the meeting, he added that the regional social sector has organised some 100 activities, including many related to fighting poverty, developing education, improving health services, caring for and empowering youth, protecting women and children, and social dialogue.

He added that a further meeting, which will be held in the next couple of days, will bring together senior officials from Arab countries to create a plan to combat terrorism, as part of the outcome of the Arab Ministerial Conference on Terrorism and Social Development that was held in Sharm El Shaikh last February, under the patronage of Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, President of Egypt.

He also pointed out that the expected outcomes of the meeting will include discussions about education, youth, regional policies, the media and all aspects and issues regarding the fight against terrorism in the region.

Al Alali explained that the agenda of the Social Committee also includes the drafting of resolutions to support the hosting of refugees and displaced people by Arab countries, the approval of the “Arab Parliament Executive Bill for Children” that was initiated by the Emirate of Sharjah, the education of children in conflict zones, and the monitoring of regional and international social updates that are relevant to Arab cooperation, with the aim of achieving sustainable development.
