Statement of Sheikha Fatima on official opening of UN Women Liaison office for GCC in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI, — H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union, GWU, Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation, FDF, and President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, has called for launching a solidarity campaign on promoting the gender equality.

Issuing a statement during the inauguration of the United Nations Women’s Liaison Office for the Gulf Cooperation Council for Arab States (GCC) in Abu Dhabi, she added that the campaign will bring together the GCC’s officials, presidents of universities, academic circles and businessmen to advance the women empowerment cause to take their natural role on equal footing with men in areas of work, production and nation-building.

The statement was read out on behalf of Sheikha Fatima by Reem Abdullah Al Falasi, Secretary-General of Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, in the presence of Ms. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka , the United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women.

Sheikha Fatima underlined that this event establishes a new era for cooperation between the UN and GCC states. She added that the new office will focus on the development of partnership to advance the woman status in the region, and back the GCC governments to promote the gender equality through the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals Agenda 2030.

The full text of the statement below: Excellences in attendance, I would like to first thank you all for coming to the opening ceremony of the UN Women Office which reflects your great interest in this outstanding step which will increase our cooperation with the UN in areas that benefit women in various fields.

The United Arab Emirates looks forward to the evolution of its relations with the United Nations towards women’s empowerment and help them towards progress and leadership.

We believe that civilised communication between peoples is the way to build a peaceful world which believes in positive dialogue, tolerance and universal humanitarian values, as well as facilitate the transfer of best practices and experiences to help individuals build their capacity and achieve their aspirations and ambitions.

Ladies and Gentlemen: Relations between the United Arab Emirates and the United Nations are witnessing a major development in general and particularly in the empowerment of women, and that is due to the useful experiences of both sides. In this context, we look forward to sharing the accumulated expertise of UAE women, which will reflect its impact on the status of women in the region.

We have pledged before the fifty-eighth session of the CSW, UN, which was held on March 15th, 2014, to continue our efforts to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in its multi-national development plans.

The UAE’s General Women’s Union has facilitated the opening of the office in order for Emirati women to benefit from the issues of focus at the UN and to support useful trends in several areas.

The strategic focus of the office will be to develop partnerships through the provision of advice on strengthening the position of women in the region and supporting the governments of the Gulf Cooperation Council, GCC, to strengthen cooperation to ensure a gender perspective during the implementation of the sustainable development agenda for 2030.

Ladies and Gentlemen: We stress the key role that the UN and its concerned bodies play for women in order to ensure the mainstreaming of gender equality and empowering women at the international and national level. We have reiterated more than once the UAE’s support of the United Nation on issues of gender equality and women’s rights and empowerment.

We would like to call after the opening of this office to launch a solidarity campaign for gender equality, with the participation of GCC officials, university heads, academics, and business people from the private sector to urge the community to make way for women to assume her natural role in the work field, and participate in the development of the country.
