Special needs basketball players steal limelight at 9th Ramadan Women’s Sports Gathering

SHARJAH — Al Thiqah Club yesterday showed an impressive display of skills on the basketball court at the Ramadan Women’s Sports Tournament. The performance of the team, comprising players with special needs, was one of the highlights of the fourth day of the ninth annual event edition.

Sharjah Ladies Sports Club team and Kuwaiti Salwa Al Sabah team moved up to the second round of the tournament’s basketball competition.

The tournament entailed three sports disciplines including, volleyball, basketball and shooting. The ninth Ramadan Women’s Sports Tournament is being held under the patronage of Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs and Wife of H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.

Hind Mohammed Al Merjah, Director of Salwa Al Sabah Basketball Club’s team, extended her profound thanks and appreciation to Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed, for her support and patronage of the ninth Ramadan sports gathering, and her keenness to develop women’s sports in the UAE and wider Arab region.

Al Merjah underlined the importance of organising such events to raise the profile of Arab women’s sports and said that her team has benefited from the tournament by being able to play with professional, international players from across the GCC.

She added that the team’s participation at the Sharjah Ramadan Women’s Sports Tournament will give them an incentive to participate in the fourth Arab Women’s Sports Tournament, in Sharjah in February 2018.
