Reading is the shortest road to combatting extremism, promoting tolerance and positivity: Lubna Al Qasimi

ABU DHABI, Sheikha Lubna bint Khalid Al Qasimi, Minister of State for Tolerance, has said she sees reading as the short-cut to combatting extremism, promoting tolerance and positivity.

She recommended reading the books: “My Vision” by Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, “The Talk of Memories” by H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, and “The Dualism of Happiness and Tolerance” by Abdul Majid Al Marzouqi.

The UAE minister said these books reflect the UAE’s experience in development, knowledge and the encouragement of talented people, and feature important events in UAE history. She also stressed their literary value and their promotion of the values of tolerance, happiness and positivity.

Sheikha Lubna made these statements during her participation in Emirates News Agency, WAM, initiatives for the Month of Reading.

WAM publishes the titles of important books, which are recommended by the nation’s ministers and officials, in order to create a useful database for readers.

Sheikha Lubna advised the new generation of UAE citizens and individuals from all nationalities, religions and cultures, to read about all types of knowledge and science on a daily basis.

She added that reading enriches minds and that civilisations are built on knowledge. She also considers reading the main reason for development, finding solutions and ideas that help humanity.

Sheikha Lubna said, “The reading is a major weapon in fighting terrorism and extremism,” noting that knowledge can defeat the myths of extremists.

She also highlighted the importance of developing cultural and educational foundations by promoting and strengthening the values of tolerance and co-existence, as well as promoting the love of reading in the minds of younger generations.

Sheikha Lubna added that readers are required to read and scrutinise amid waves of fake news and emergence of modern hatred and discrimination.

She said that the UAE has established a philosophy of tolerance that “is based on the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, as well as on traditional Emirati values, international conventions, common sense and shared values.”

The UAE minister called on people to maintain these rich values so as to combat the extremism, violence, hatred and discrimination through promoting the values of moderation, tolerance, peace and co-existence.
