Over 600 students set to graduate at AUS Spring 2017 Commencement

SHARJAH, — H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah and President of the American University of Sharjah, AUS, will attend the university’s Spring 2017 Commencement on 25th May at the University City Hall in Sharjah.

A total of 649 undergraduate and graduate students will participate in the ceremony. In preparation for the event, a rehearsal was held on Wednesday, followed by a class photograph and a luncheon in honour of the graduating class.

Speaking on the occasion, AUS Chancellor Dr. Bjorn Kjerfve congratulated the Class of Spring 2017 and said, “You should feel proud of your achievement as you see your hard work and dedication come to fruition. I have no doubt that however ambitious your dreams may be, a great many of you will accomplish, and indeed surpass, the goals you have set for yourselves.”

Speaking about the university’s developments, he said, “As the university moves towards its next phase that of becoming a leading global research institution I urge you to keep in touch with AUS and to encourage those who come after you by supporting them in their academic ambitions. You are the best ambassadors of the AUS. Your alma mater takes pride in your success.”

Mohammed Sultan, General Manager of Procter & Gamble Arabian Peninsula, also addressed the graduates and spoke about his career. He advised the students on the qualities required to succeed in the workplace, which include leadership abilities, a positive attitude, strength, and strong principles, among others.

Ten members of the graduating class were also recognised for their outstanding academic performances. The AUS has succeeded in becoming a pioneer in higher education in the region. The university has endeavoured to develop long-lasting ties with public and private sectors, which is a step toward bridging the gap between higher educational institutions and the job market, both for the present and future generations of students and alumni.

Founded in 1997, the university has fulfilled Dr. Sultan’s vision of a quality institution catering to the aspirations and needs of the UAE and the wider Gulf community as a whole. Over the past decade, the student body has increased considerably, necessitating the launch of two graduation ceremonies per year.
